I love that quote! We need to use that more often. Right away I thought of the famous Mac vs. PC arguement! Really it is the same soil but there are different trees planted in that soil so we really need to make sure there are plenty of different nutrients in that soil so all the trees grow!
I think I better go to bed... I am talking about trees!

We have been asking each time we meet what globalization has to do with education. In the February 2007 issue of ISTE's Learning & Leading there was an article addressing this very issue. See the short article at the following address. http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Publications/LL/LLIssues/Volume_34_2006_2007_/February_5_/34505m.pdf

This morning in our discussion we were talking about preparing students for the jobs of the future. The SEO's (Search Engine Optimizers) were brought up. I wanted to mention that there is a new search engine now available called Cha-Cha http://www.chacha.com/.
This does typical search engine things but one thing available here is to hire someone to do the searches for you! I don't know what the qualifications are for this job but think about who can be applying for this! Think about what sorts of searches they might be hired to do. When I was teaching careers to 8th graders, I wasn't thinking about these possibilities. Are schools ready for these kinds of careers? Are post-secondary institutions ready for these kinds of careers?

Thanks so much for this link! I really find this video a valuable tool in putting all these concepts together and applying them to what we do here in our office! Thanks for making those connections, Trouble9!

While this is not a direct lesson from one of the flatteners, I thought it went well with this section and definitely has a lesson for us. This is from an ABC interview with a shopping mall director: “We are always trying to stay fresh, if we were to remain stagnant we would loose out to the competition. So, everyday we are looking out to ‘how can we improve upon what we are doing’.”

How can we at ESU 10 think about supply chains and what we can provide horizontallly to our schools? What does each of our departments contribute to school improvement in ESU 10? I think the supply chain idea could be applied to our situation.

At the end of Flattener #6 (p. 150 2nd Edition) Friedman makes the following comment: "But even as a free-trader, I am worried about the challenge this will pose to wages and benefits of certain workers in the United States, at least in the short run." I worry about it in the long term! While I understand protectionism is not the answer and change is going to happen with or without us, I still feel we have a duty to care for those displaced by these changes. I realize our POV is education so what a wonderful discussion for our students: "What happens to those displaced, what is it going to cost us, financially, politically, and emotionally. Do we care? "

Thanks for commenting! This is a great start!
Don't we already have displaced workers? I might not be on the right idea here but for the sake of getting a discussion going... In the Gates' "Building 21st Century Schools" they talk about instilling adaptivity in our students because we really don't know what they will be up against when they get into the workforce. On a podcast I recently heard, the gentleman said that the kindergarteners of today will retire in 2065. (I haven't even thought about tomorrow! ) So, is our duty as educators is to prepare students, as best we can, to be able to adapt to what they might encounter in any profession? Instilling in them the concept of being a life-long learner - not just for teachers anymore!
